Having read Dr.J M. Rojo's letter and then the Nature's mission statement, the most important thing it comes to my mind is that this letter is at least out of scope, and that Nature's subscribers should be treated with more respect for what they are paying for. Nature's referee process and editorial board will have to, at least, learn something from that lamentable mistake.

Having said that, this is not the place to debate Dr. J M. Rojo's personal opinions, but some comments are obliged. First, "But maybe these French academics have looked south and seen what has happened in Spain" is just a mere speculation that doesn't follow scientific method and serves the only purpose of presenting Spain as a country with a big problem that was not attended by its government. Secondly, the statement "Today, it is impossible to obtain public or publicly funded education in Spanish, the common language, in the schools of about one third of the country, including Catalonia, Mallorca and Valencia" is a lie. In a scientific journal lies should be avoided, specially when empiric data is available to demonstrate its falsity. More specially, perhaps, when someone has the recent history of the country to compare to. Then follows some personal opinions that doesn't deserve much attention, as if someone has managed to pass the editorial board and then published that he "don't like electrons because they are ugly". Dr. J M. Rojo's final apologetic reference to the self propagandist manifesto that some self named intellectuals managed to produce is sad and offending; and to respect again the truth, it should be noted that other manifestos and responses came from, at least, some other equally prepared intellectuals from Spain that expressed contrary opinions.

Scientific community members should know (and understand) as early as possible it's huge responsibility and it's obligation to contribute to the advancement of science and the humankind in general. That's what they are paid for and Nature certainly should embrace that goal.
